Brett's Relationship with Pedro (and somewhat Jake)

Brett's relationship with Pedro starts with Jake taking the whole group to the bullfights, and the coincidence of both parties staying at the Montoya Hotel. Brett appears to fall in love at first sight, completely ignoring the feelings of both Cohn and Jake, although Jake appears to not care about the relationship, even willingly introducing the two. Brett proceeds to spend a lot of time with Pedro, with their relationship progressing fast, to the point of Pedro giving his "trophies" from the bulls to Brett. Just based on the two relationships of Brett's that start during the book, Brett seems to get into relationships extremely fast, with the only relationship she takes any amount of care with seeming to be Jake, although neither seems to think they can be together.

With both relationships mentioned earlier (Brett and Cohn, and Brett and Pedro), once getting somewhat far into the relationship Brett gets out as fast as she can, often asking Jake for some help. In the Pedro relationship, after leaving along with Pedro to Madrid she gets scared and after asking Pedro to leave, sends a telegram to Jake to come to help her out. This whole relationship with Pedro lasted at most a few weeks. This, along with her short relationship with Cohn, shows an aversion to commitment. This seems to be true of all her relationships except for the one with Jake, perhaps because the nature of Jake's injury forces them to take the relationship much slower and not nearly as far.

  1. I like how you point out her fear of commitment. I found this to be evident in the beginning of the book; however, it has definitely grown more apparent throughout the novel. I think she uses Jake as a crutch in her aversion to commitment in a way. As you said, she asks him to come to her rescue and she knows he will come every time. It sucks for Jake; however, I think he's kind of an escape route for Brett in that respect.
